Where is Kia Made?

Where is Kia made? It’s a common question we hear at Greenway Kia West, right alongside “What country is Kia from?” Kia has its headquarters in Seoul, South Korea, but this global brand also has an assembly plant in Georgia and a design facility in California. Greenway Kia West is proud to discuss Kia history as well as who makes Kia for our neighbors in Orlando and Winter Garden.

What Country is Kia From?

Kia originated in South Korea, and the brand’s current headquarters are in Seoul. Specifically, Kia is made in the Yeongdeungpo-gu district, which is located in southwest Seoul. Kia’s first automotive assembly plant opened in 1973.

Who Owns Kia?

Does Hyundai own Kia? While there are quite a few drivers out there who will tell you that Hyundai owns Kia — or that they’re the same company — Hyundai owns roughly 33% of Kia’s stock. While they were a majority owner in the late 90s with 51% of the stock, Hyundai now no longer has the majority, though the companies keep close ties.

History of the Kia Brand

Although Kia is known for producing some of the world’s most popular automobiles, the brand’s origins are not in the automotive space. Originally, Kia manufactured steel pipes and bicycle parts by hand. After Kia became more established in the steel business, it began manufacturing bikes in 1951. Kia eventually started producing motorcycles before moving on to commercial vehicles in 1962.

Kia dealerships began popping up in the United States in 1992. By 1995, there were 30 Kia dealerships across America. As the years went by, Kia grew more and more in popularity and expanded its lineup with vehicles like the beloved Soul and the Sportage. Now there are over 750 Kia dealers in the United States.

Where is Kia from Now?

Kia vehicles are manufactured at multiple locations worldwide. In addition to its headquarters in Seoul, there is a Kia assembly plant in West Point, Georgia and Zilina, Slovakia. Impressed by the design of the new Kia K5? Then you’ve got auto experts in Irvine, California at Kia’s Design Center. From its origins in the steel industry to becoming a leader in the automotive market, Kia really has come a long way over the last few decades.
